about

A compilation of albums and EP's made during the Australian summer November 2009 - February 2010 when I lived in a beachside apartment on the Gold Coast, Queensland, famous for being a tourist trap of sun and surf. I would spend afternoons on my 6th floor porch where I could see the entire coastline for several kilometres, surveying the scene along with a broken electric guitar with 4 untuned strings that I didn't know how to play, and my very first laptop (a piece of garbage by todays standards, but did the job?) running Audiomulch and Soundforge, improvising then editing later. This is the result of those sessions in all their lo fi glory - always wanted to make a box set of this stuff but have neither the time or the money to have these remastered (and the original recordings are lost on a long dead hard drive) so this is all there is, for better or worse, sadly.

Pacific Ocean Blues (tracks 1-7) inspired by returning to my hometown after a long time living in other cities and watching it turn from a small seaside paradise into a brutalist monolith of high rise buildings, which continues to this day. not the place I grew up in.

Stormy Weather (tracks 8-9) during summer we would get the tail end of the cyclones that wreak havoc every year about 1000km north, resulting in intense wind & rain storms with churning oceans. a 40+ minute improv (cut into 2 parts due to Bandcamp upload restrictions) made with minimal loops until the rain was starting to wet my laptop so rushed back inside.

What The Sea Saw (track 10) an ultra lo fi 15 min improv inspired by a report of a shark attack not far from where I lived, from the perspective of ocean dwelling creatures. sounds nothing like that description, but whatever.

Swelter Frequencies (tracks 11-20) this was my attempt at a "pop" album. made in an afternoon on a ridiculously hot day using samples from some of my favourite songs from the 60's to the 90's. Some sounds are recognisable, others not so much. If anyone guesses any or all of them, you get a gold star.

The Final Sunset (tracks 21-24) made the day I moved out of the apartment. the guitar was played through a mic'd up mini amp in an empty room after all my stuff was gone to get the resonance of the space & processed in real time. a bittersweet moment, but also a relief.
